Two vehicles torched as protests escalate in CBD

At least two vehicles have been set ablaze in Nairobi’s Central Business District as protests demanding the resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat turned violent.

Thick smoke and towering flames were seen near the Kenya Cinema building, where the vehicles were parked.

Tensions between police and protesters have been escalating throughout the day, prompting officers to fire teargas to disperse crowds.

Goons have also vandalised infrastructure across the CBD, including signposts and dustbins.

Police have deployed additional units, including anti-riot officers, the General Service Unit (GSU), and plainclothes officers, in a bid to restore order.

Further, a police helicopter provided support through aerial surveillance.

In the ensuing chaos, businesses were forced to shut to avoid losses caused by the theft witnessed in the past demos.

Moi Avenue, Harambee Avenue, and Haile Selassie Avenue are among the most affected areas.

The demonstrators are demanding justice for Albert Ojwang’, a teacher and blogger who died in police custody after allegedly being tortured.
